Sphecodes niger (von Hagens, 1874)
Hymenoptera continue to be a much under-recorded invertebrate Order in Nottinghamshire and the distribution of the less well-known (or more obvious) species tends to come as a result of specialist surveys. Sphecodes are difficult to identify and a specimen is required for accurate identification. The female  Sphecodes niger pictured below, was recorded and photographed by Tim Sexton on the site of the former Rufford Colliery at Rainworth in September 2020. There appear to be no other recent Nottinghamshire records of this RDB3 species, which has a patchy distribution over southern UK counties.
