Larinioides
sclopetarius (Clerck, 1757) |
A large orb
weaving species which is scarce across the UK. It is
often common where it occurs, as was the case when we
found well over 100 together on an outflow at Shirebrook
Pit Wood in August 2012.
Larinioides
sclopetarius is known from an increasing number of sites across
Nottinghamshire and is usually found on man made
structures like bridges, but nearly always against water. At one time,
the orb-webs of this spider were abundant on the window frames outside
the main entrance to King's Mill Hospital at
Sutton-in-Ashfield a number of years ago. |
