This season has been another interesting one, as in late June it looked like we would not reach 400 females for the year. The final total ended up being 742, which is the highest since 2011 and has put a halt on the decline in numbers here over recent years.

A female, lightly covered in mud, was found glowing in the middle of the forest tracks marking the junctions of sections F and J. On close inspection before moving her to a safer location, she was found to be egglaying, having already deposted over 20 eggs down the side of a loose stone. The left hand column shows the break down of weekly periods each Spring, with the corresponding size averages for that week each year.

Reading the size data in each year's column, shows how larval growth is completed before pupation. All the larvae found during daylight in the survey sections, are now believed to be post hibernation/pre-pupation larvae, probably feeding once during.

It is interesting to note how the total average larval size for each Spring period, has decreased since 2009, based on the data we have.

This Spring has seen larvae out in good numbers and counts seem higher than they have been for a couple of years.
